GEOGRAPHY
Located in the center of Turkey, Cappadocia is a region you may not see on Google Maps or any other maps for that matter. The reason is that this region is an ancient region not mentioned on modern Turkish urban plans. Instead you will see on the maps the city and town names such as Nevşehir, Göreme, Uçhisar, Ürgüp and so on.
Cappadocia is only an hour flight away from Istanbul, the biggest Turkish city.

GEOLOGY
The wonder of Cappadocia most visible to the naked eye would be its geology. Many visitors whom arrive in the dark of the night is up for a sweet surprise with the sunrise, which unveils unique and beautiful rock formations.
Violent volcanic eruptions set the stage millions of years ago for a magical landscape to be carved-out at the hands of erosion itself, the best of sculptors. The volcanic material, tens of meters in depth was deposited across a region of about ten thousand square kilometers, and area roughly the size of Cyprus or Lebanon. Later the power of erosion slowly carved this layer to the state we see today. Of course this process of eruption followed by erosion has been repeated a few times as far as we know, and this is how the embroidery-like landscapes were created, layers over layers...

A BRIEF HISTORY
Cappadocia has been inhabited since the beginning of history, it may as well be the reason for "Stone Age" to have its name as such. Kidding aside, the soft rocks of Cappadocia were very convenient for the early humans as they could easily carve out warm and cozy spaces for living. The oldest found archeological records show us that first humans settled in this region before the rising of systematic civilizations. The layer of history in Cappadocia includes Hittites, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Selcuks, Ottomans and modern day Turkey among many other smaller civilizations.

RELIGIOUS HISTORY
One of the most interesting aspects of Cappadocian history is its evident Christian history which drives its religious tourism sector. Early Christians running away from persecution had found Cappadocia and its Underground Cities which were built at least 2,000 years before their discovery of these cities, and they built their hidden churches inside to pray in a safe environment away from the Roman soldiers. Following a couple of centuries of hiding, Christians were free to practice their religions from 4th Century onwards with the Christianization of the Roman Empire. This made Cappadocia the center of early Christianity by the help of already existent numerous churches and christians. Some of the most beautiful early fresco art can be found around Cappadocia, mainly in the Goreme Open Air Museum.
